Turkish Grinder-A Taste of Hearth Cooking

For the receipt (recipe) To make the drink that is now much used called coffee both the elaborately carved brass Turkish coffee grinder and a mortar and pestle were used to process the roasted coffee berries.  Coffee was first introduced into the Ottoman Empire in the mid-16th century and wood mortar and pestles were used to grind the coffee but produced a very coarse grind.  In the 17th century, the brass Turkish coffee grinder was introduced which produced a fine, even grind.
