The Symnel

IMG_0007-002  There were many varieties of Cucurbitaceae (squashes, pumpkin) that were grown by the Lenape.  Late summer and fall, the small new squash were harvested.  The grass basket contains the harvested squash preserved by drying.  The European word for the scalloped squash in the 17th century was symnel.

Are there any Lanape squash seeds available that I could try growing?

Not pictured in the blog post you viewed is the green and white striped Lenape squash. Both seeds for symnels and
green and white are available for purchase on line if you search for The Roughwood Center for Heritage Seedways. The
Green Striped Maycock (2024) is already out of stock. But the Tall Striped Maycock is still available as well as a white symnel,
      Lenape Finger Squash.
